Jessica on a Vacation in Florida

This is another entry into our traveling series, where our lifestyle reporter, Anthony, travels around the world to discover new places. This time, he’s enjoying the vacation in Florida.

Throughout this series, I’ve traveled around the world – mostly alone. This time, I decided it was finally time to take the ultimate risk: a vacation with my parents and sister.

After days of talking and discussing, we decided we wanted to go somewhere with good weather, beautiful nature, and, most importantly, amazing food – so we decided on Florida!

Choosing Our Florida Adventure

We had plenty of options in Florida, so we focused on our interests to guide our choices. First, we decided to explore the magical theme parks of Orlando. Then, we planned to unwind by spending some time on the beaches of the Gulf Coast.

Theme Parks

Universal Studios FLOrlando was the first stop on our list, and this trip wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Disney World.

As kids, we had been to Disneyland but never Disney World, so we made sure to savor every moment. We posed with princesses, rode iconic attractions, and watched Cinderella’s Castle light up with fireworks. It was pure nostalgia for my parents while my sister and I rediscovered our inner child.

The next day, we hopped over to Universal Studios. We figured we’d do the tiring stuff in the early part of our trip so we could mostly relax in the latter part.

Florida’s Universal Studios didn’t disappoint. We traded fairy tales for movie magic, wandered through Hogsmeade, sipped on Butterbeer, and braved the amazing rides in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

One of the highlights was seeing my dad geek out and buy an interactive wand. He may or may not have used it to “accidentally” cast spells on unsuspecting tourists.

Coastal Escapes

Siesta Key FLAfter two days of theme park madness, we were ready for a change of pace. My parents were starting to show their age, and all that walking and waiting in lines had them begging for a comfy lounge chair and a tropical cocktail. To be very honest, my sister and I also felt the same way.

To recover from two days of exploring, I ensured we had a free day. I spent this mostly sleeping and binge-watching some questionable reality TV.

Then, we headed to Siesta Key, a little slice of paradise on the Gulf Coast. We checked into the Capri at Siesta, a charming beachfront hotel with a laid-back vibe. We booked two rooms – one for my parents and another for my sister and me.

The Capri proved to be the perfect home base for our beach escape. Our room came with all the essentials: comfy beds, a spacious bathroom, and a fully equipped kitchen. The fridge was even stocked with all sorts of goodies, which was a pleasant surprise.

I chose this place primarily for its location – it’s within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and the legendary Siesta Beach. We spent our days soaking up the sun and swimming in the crystal-clear waters.

For those looking for more than just sun and sand, Siesta Key offers plenty of activities. I saw people parasailing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. I also heard about the Siesta Key Drum Circle, a weekly gathering where locals and tourists come together to drum, dance, and celebrate the sunset.

Tips for a Smooth Family Vacation

I understand that planning a family trip can seem daunting, especially if kids are involved. We traveled without children, which simplified some aspects, but I was particularly attentive to my parents’ needs, given that they’re very picky.

Regardless of your travel companions, a bit of preparation and the right approach can significantly ease the process. Here are some insights that might help you ensure your family vacation is as smooth and enjoyable as possible:

Pre-Trip Planning

Many don’t even consider this, but as we were all adults with things going on in our lives, we made sure to find the time to meet before and after I figured out the things we’d do in Florida.

This helped a lot because we got to talk about everyone’s expectations, must-do activities, and potential challenges. This could also help avoid those “But I wanted to go to the beach!” meltdowns later on.

Pack Your Patience

Traveling with family can test your patience, especially when you’re dealing with different personalities, energy levels, and opinions. My advice? Pack a hefty dose of patience and maybe even a noise-canceling headset for those moments when you just need a little peace and quiet.

Be Ready to Compromise

Not everyone will want to do the same activities, and that’s perfectly okay. Be willing to compromise and find options everyone can enjoy – even if it means splitting up for a few hours. The goal is to create shared memories, not to force anyone into something they’re not excited about.

Don’t Be Afraid to Splurge

While sticking to a budget is important, don’t hesitate to splurge on a few special experiences that everyone will cherish. Whether it’s a fancy dinner, a private tour, or a luxurious spa day, these moments can make the trip extra memorable.

For us, it was a fancy dinner on our second night in Siesta Key. Let’s just say we spent a serious amount, but moments like these don’t happen often, so I didn’t mind.

Remember Why You’re There

Amidst the occasional chaos and bickering, remind yourself of the reason behind this family vacation – spending quality time together and creating lasting memories. Put down your phones, disconnect from the digital world, and truly be present. Laugh together, explore together, and savor the moments you share.

My Trip to Florida – Final Words

MI, FLI can wholeheartedly recommend Florida as an excellent destination for families. We all had a wonderful time, and there’s already chatter about returning to the Sunshine State for our next family outing.

However, I’m tempted to take them on an international adventure for our next trip. I’m certain I’ll be back in Florida again. With or without family, there’s just too much left to see and experience. I’m looking forward to my next visit!
