Elizabeth Lu, a flutist from Manalapan, has been working as a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center, Lenox, Mass., this summer. The center is the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer academy for advanced musical study.
Lu is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pa., and the Colburn School, Los Angeles. She studied under the former principal of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Jim Walker, and a solo flutist of the New York Philharmonic, Jeanne Baxtresser, according to a press release.
Lu is currently a fellow at the New World Symphony, Miami Beach, Fla.
In the past, Lu has been a principal flutist in the Young Artists Symphony Orchestra in Los Angeles. She has earned top prizes from the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition, the National Flute Association High School Competition, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition and the Wyoming, Ohio, Music Club Competition, according to the press release.
The Tanglewood Music Center selects more than 100 prominent young artists to perform each summer. Lu was chosen to become a flute fellow and to perform in concerts.
Lu was appointed principal flutist in Brahms’ Tragic Overture and Berg’s Seven Early Songs, and most recently was the principal flutist role for Tchaikovsky’s Overture 1812, Op. 49, in the “Tanglewood on Parade” Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra Concert on Aug. 1.
