Member of Vonthun family killed in hit-and-run

SOUTH BRUNSWICK – Authorities are actively searching for the driver who fled after striking a 49-year-old bicyclist on Route 522 in South Brunswick on Dec. 13.

The deceased bicyclist was identified as Ronald Vonthun, 49, of South Brunswick. He was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where he was pronounced dead from the injuries he sustained in the hit and run, according to information provided by Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Christopher L.C. Kuberiet and Chief Raymond J. Hayducka of the South Brunswick Police Department.

Vonthun is a member of the family who owns VonThun’s Country Farm Market in South Brunswick and VonThun Farms in Washington.

An autopsy has been scheduled with the Middlesex County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, according to the statement on Dec. 14.

Officer Michael Leung of the South Brunswick Police Department and Detective Jonathan Berman of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that at approximately 10:06 p.m, the driver was traveling on Route 522, struck the victim between Georges Road and Kingston Lane, and then fled the scene, according to reports.
