“Reconnecting” sculpture by New Jersey artist Eric Schulz is on exhibit for the month of June, with an opening reception June 4th from 6 – 8 pm. Schultz’s work is known by anyone who has walked down Broad Street in Hopewell. “Joyful Tune,” a seven foot tall banjo player sits next to the gallery and represents what Schultz does best: connection. He connects parts to other parts, parts to sites, people to parts, people to communities. “Reconnecting,” coming at a time when people are coming together again, features recent small- and large- scale sculptures that display Schultz’s unique ability to transform scavenged metal and other found objects into works of wonder and imagination.
Schultz has exhibited widely throughout the region for the past 20 years, including the Noyes Museum’s Eric Schultz, Man and the Machine (2014). Grounds For Sculpture partnered with Schultz for the 2010 Artist in Residence program, during which he worked alongside community volunteers to create a sculpture, entitled “Sleeping Giant,” made of donated found objects. Schultz also collaborated with the nonprofit organization ISLES in 2017 working with children ages 12 to 15 in summer camp creating “Helping Hands.” The ensuing controversy over this sculpture was highly publicized, and a play based on it entitled, “The OK Trenton Project” was performed at the Passage Theatre Company this past February.
