Princeton U hoops

The Princeton University men’s basketball team upset 17th-ranked Arizona State, 67-66, last Saturday in Tempe. Devin Cannady led four Tigers in double-figures with 21 points. Jerome Desrosiers scored 16 points, while Sebastian Much and Richmond Arirguzoh contributed to the surprise victory with 13 points apiece. Princeton improved to 7-5 with the upset. The Tigers will be the host to Penn on Saturday at 5 p.m. in their Ivy League opener.

The Princeton women’s basketball team ran its winning streak to seven in a row with a 90-42 decision at New Hampshire last Saturday. Bella Alarie led the Tigers with 18 points, while Taylor Baur and Gabrielle Rush registered 12 points apiece. Princeton, which improved to 8-7 on the season, will be home to Penn in its Ivy League opener on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Princeton U hockey

The Princeton men’s ice hockey team picked up a pair of victories last weekend, defeating Maine, 1-0 and 7-3. Ryan Kuffner scored the only goal of the game and Ryan Ferland made 40 saves in the opening victory. Corey Andonovski scored a pair of goals in the following win. Princeton, which is now 5-8-2, will be the host to Cornell on Friday and Colgate on Saturday at Baker Rink.

The Princeton women ran their unbeaten streak to 14 with a victory and a tie against Merrimack. Princeton posted a 5-3 victory on Monday as Sarah Fillier scored a pair of goals and Carly Bullock added a goal and two assists. The Tigers played Merrimack to a 1-1 tie on Sunday. Sarah Fillier scored the Princeton goal, while Rachel McQuigge made 23 saves in goal. Princeton, which improved to 10-2-4, will play at Harvard on Friday and at Dartmouth on Saturday.

Princeton U wrestling

The Princeton University wrestling team had two individual champions and finished fifth as a team at the prestigious Midlands Championships, a tournament that was held this past week in Hoffman Estates, Ill., just outside in Chicago.

Top-seeded Matthew Kolodzikd, the nation’s top-ranked wrestler at 149, defeated Northern Iowa’s Max Thomsen 3-1 to claim Princeton’s first Midlands title, and sophomore Patrick Bruckie, currently ranked third at 197, ended the dream run of South Dakota State’s Tanner Sloan with a 13-4 major decision to earn the program’s second title.

The two individual victories, along with a strong overall performance throughout the team, helped Princeton to its highest-finish ever at Midlands. The Tigers placed fifth overall with 92.5 points, only five behind Wisconsin. The Tigers will compete in the Franklin and Marshall Open in Lancaster, Pa. on Saturday.

Resolution Run

Hillsborough resident William Gillette was the top overall finisher in the Hillsborough Resolution Run 5k, which was held New Year’s Day in Hillsborough. Gillette finished in 18:21, which was 10 seconds faster than Gunnar Clingman of Pennington. Montgomery resident Sean Scarpa finished ninth in 19:30.
Erika Meling of North Brunswick was the top female finisher, third overall, with a time of 18:59. Marina Muncan of Somerset was the second female finisher, seventh overall, in 19:24.
COLLEGE

 

Anthony Cassar

The Montgomery High graduate is 7-0 this season for the top-ranked Penn State University wrestling team. Cassar, a senior, is ranked fifth in the nation at 285 pounds. Penn State is 4-0 after posting a 41-3 victory over ninth-ranked Arizona State on Dec. 14. Cassar recorded a fall in the final match of the night to cap off the victory.

The Nittany Lions were scheduled to compete in the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn. on Tuesday and Wednesday.
