‘We liked him so much’

New Lawrence Township police sergeant is a second-generation township police officer

Lawrence Township police Sgt. Robert Janoski Jr., who is a second-generation Lawrence police officer, was sworn into his new position at the Lawrence Township Council’s Oct. 17 meeting.

Janoski was appointed as acting police sergeant on Sept. 9, but “we liked him so much” that the promotion was made permanent nine days later, said Police Chief Christopher Longo.

“We are celebrating someone who is very deserving of promotion. For those who know Bobby, he is a great guy who is always willing to help. He is someone we can depend on,” Longo said.

Janoski is following in the footsteps of his father, Robert Janoski Sr., as a Lawrence Township police officer. He was a police officer from 1978 to 2004. He was a role model and a highly respected police officer, Longo said.

Robert Janoski Jr. was born and raised in Lawrence Township, Longo said. He graduated from Lawrence High School and studied engineering at Rutgers University. He joined the Lawrence Township Police Department in 2014.

Janoski has taken an interest in motor vehicle crash investigations and is certified as an advanced crash investigator, Longo said. He is a certified alcotest operator. The device is used in suspected alcohol-impaired driving incidents.

During his nine-year career, Janoski earned two Commendable Service awards, three Unit Citation awards and was honored by the Mothers Against Drunk Driving for having made the most arrests for driving under the influence in 2018.

“We are proud of you. You will do great things for the Police Department,” Longo said.

Janoski thanked the Township Council and the Lawrence Township Police Department’s command staff – the lieutenants, the captain and the police chief – for their trust and wisdom over the years.

“I definitely wouldn’t be here if it were not for them. I learned countless amounts of things from them. I look forward to serving the township,” Janoski said.
