Man charged with stealing copper pipes

SOUTH RIVER – A suspect has been charged with stealing copper from a borough residence.

Patrolman Brian Hyslop reportedly observed a male walking around an abandoned property near Causeway and Browns Lane at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 27, according to information provided by the South River Police Department.

Upon being approached by officers, the suspect allegedly dropped two pieces of copper pipe, according to police.

Later identified as Derek Dunfee, 43, of Princeton, the suspect allegedly removed the copper from a residence on Little Martin Avenue. As a result, he was charged with burglary and theft by unlawful taking.

Dunfee was subsequently transported to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick in lieu of $30,000 bail.
