The calendar has flipped to February, which is the time of the winter scholastic season when tournaments are beginning to take form.

Here are some tournaments and regular-season events to focus on this week.

The wrestling postseason has been launched … 

The NJSIAA sectional tournaments have started, beginning Feb. 6 with the opening rounds at gyms throughout New Jersey.

The sectional semifinals were scheduled for Feb. 8 at the schools of the higher-seeded teams. The championships will be settled Feb. 10, also at the sites of the higher remaining seeds.

From there, the four sectional winners from each of the five groups in the public schools and the four champions from the non-public groups in the two sections will wrestle for group titles Feb. 12 at Pine Belt Arena at Toms River High School North.

Once the team competition is completed Feb. 12, the individual tournaments will commence. The 32 district tournaments will be held the weekend of Feb. 17-18. The eight regions are contested during the week of Feb. 20. The action wraps up on the weekend of March 3-5 with the state tournament in Atlantic City.

There are some regular-season meets worth attending this week as well.

On Feb. 11, three quad meets highlight the schedule. Shore Regional High School in West Long Branch welcomes Middletown High School North, Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School and Marlboro High School. The action begins at 9 a.m. Also kicking off at 9 a.m. will be South Brunswick High School serving as the host to  Edison High School, Middletown High School South and Carteret High School.

At 10 a.m., Freehold Township High School hosts Red Bank Catholic High School, Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School and Northern Burlington County Regional High School.

The state track sectionals have already begun …

The NJSIAA indoor track and field sectional meets began this past weekend and will resume Feb. 10-12 at the John Bennett Indoor Athletic Complex in Toms River.

On Feb. 10, the South Jersey, Groups II and III meets will go off at 3:45 p.m. There is a doubleheader Feb. 11, when North Jersey, Section II, Groups II and III compete at 9 a..m, followed by the North Jersey, Section I, Groups II and III championships at 3 p.m.

The sectionals end Feb. 12 with the Central Jersey, Groups II and II meets. The group championship meets will be held on Feb. 17-18.

The indoor season will come to an end when the Meet of Champions are scheduled Feb. 25 for boys and Feb. 26 for girls.

On the boys’ basketball schedule …

Three Shore Conference and one Greater Middlesex Conference matchup spice up the slate Feb. 9.

At 3:45 p.m., Howell High School will entertain Freehold High School, while at 6:30 p.m., Colts Neck High School pays a call to Neptune High School. At 6:45 p.m., Red Bank Catholic is home to Long Branch High School.

In the Greater Middlesex Conference, Spotswod High School hosts Edison at 5:30 p.m.

The action heats up Feb. 10 with a full slate of Shore Conference games.

The action starts at 5:15 p.m., when Middletown South is home to Ocean Township High School. At 5:30 p.m., Jackson Memorial High School welcomes Brick Township High School and the Ranney School, which is one of the premier teams this winter in the area, visits Belmar to meet St. Rose High School.

The 6 p.m. slot features Manalapan High School making the short trip to tangle with Freehold Township and Marlboro High School meeting Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft.

At 6:30 p.m., Red Bank Regional High School hosts Holmdel High School and Shore Regional visits Hazlet to meet Raritan High School.

Checking out the girls’ basketball games …

The schedule Feb. 9 is the heaviest of the week. Four Shore Conference games stand out that day.

The first to go off is the 5:15 p.m. tilt between Howell and host Freehold, followed by a 6 p.m. game between the host, Holmdel, and Red Bank Regional.

In the 6:30 p.m. time slot, Brick Memorial High School will be home to Jackson Memorial and Raritan travels to West Long Branch to play Shore Regional.

In the Greater Middlesex Conference Feb. 9, North Brunswick Township High School will welcome John P. Stevens High School for a 5:30 p.m. encounter.

A lighter Feb. 10 slate includes Ocean Township playing on its home court against Middletown South at 5:15 p.m. and Edison serving as the host to Spotswood at 6 p.m.

Hitting the ice …

The battle of Middletown will be on center ice Feb. 10, when Middletown South clashes with Middletown North at the Middletown Ice World. The rivalry will go off at 6:15 p.m.

Another game involving local bragging rights will also be contested Feb. 10, when Freehold skates against Jackson Memorial at Howell Ice World. The puck will be dropped at 8:15 p.m.
